  • On May 31, officers were on patrol and attempted to stop a suspect on his bicycle for a vehicle code violation. The suspect fled from his bicycle on foot, and a short foot pursuit ensued. While running, the suspect threw an item over a house. Officers ultimately tackled the suspect to the ground, and he was taken into custody. Officers checked the area behind the residence and located a loaded firearm. The suspect was a 37-year-old male Hispanic, Pico Nuevo gang member. The suspect had a pre-existing leg injury from being shot 2 months prior. Officers did not sustain any injuries. The suspect was booked for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and transported to the County Jail.

  • On June 2, Downey officers were dispatched to the JCPenney’s east parking lot regarding a male white choking a female black woman inside a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers located the vehicle and observed the male choking the female. The male was ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint, and he complied. As the male was being taken into custody, he was bleeding from the right side of his face and had scratches on his neck. During the investigation, it was determined that there was an argument between the male and the female. As a result of the argument, the female armed herself with a set of car keys and punched the male approximately 3-4 times. The male then choked the female in self-defense and sat on her legs as officers arrived on the scene. Both parties were arrested, and detectives are investigating.

  • On June 2, officers responded to Old River School Rd and Firestone for calls of 25-30 juveniles on bikes. Officers attempted to stop multiple juveniles at Brookshire and Firestone. The juvies fled in multiple directions, many of them down Brookshire. The juveniles were disregarding officers' attempts to stop and detain them, doing wheelies on the opposite side of the road directly headed toward traffic, and blocking both lanes of southbound traffic. Several officers ran after and detained multiple juveniles. In the end, three were arrested, and one was issued a citation for no helmet.

  • On June 4, officers responded to an unknown male following a female off the bus. Officers contacted the suspect, a 41-year-old Long Beach resident, inside of Dollar Tree while the female was allowed to leave. After the female left, the suspect was advised to leave the store, but he refused. The male was ultimately arrested for trespassing.
