Culver City pulls away from Bears after close first half

The Warren High School football team suffered their first loss of the season last Friday night against Culver City at Warren 56-28. With the loss, Warren fell to 2-1 and with the win, Culver City improved to 3-0.

In the Warren/Culver City game, the Bears trailed 27-21 at halftime. Culver City scored a touchdown in the third quarter to extend their lead to 33-21. Warren answered back and closed the score to 33-28. Culver City responded with another touchdown and two-point conversion to extend their lead to 41-28. The third quarter came to an end with Warren trailing 41-28.

Culver City scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 49-28 after the first touchdown and eventually 56-28 after their second touchdown. The game concluded with Culver City winning 56-28. 

The Bears played Mayfair at Bellflower High School last night (score unavailable at press time). Bellflower came into last night’s game with a record of 1-3. The Monsoons were defeated by Santa Margarita 21-0 in their first game, were defeated by Wilson 24-13 in their second game, defeated Lakewood 43-6 in their third game and were defeated by Mira Costa 37-26 in their last game.

Coach Pearson, his staff and players are all looking forward to finishing preseason play on a strong note and to the start of San Gabriel Valley League play. The Bears are looking to compete for a league title and qualify for C.I.F. postseason play.

Downey Football: The Downey High School football team had their BYE last week and will host Bishop Alemany tonight at Downey. Downey currently has an overall record of 1-2 and have not begun San Gabriel Valley League play. The Vikings were defeated by Corona del Mar 57-20 on Aug. 23, were defeated by Kapolei of Hawai’i 31-28 on Aug. 30, and defeated Locke of Los Angeles 41-13 two weeks ago. Downey will travel to Hart next week.

Alemany comes into tonight’s game with a record of 4-0. Alemany defeated Jordan of Sandy, Utah 62-26 on Aug 16, defeated Higley of Gilbert, Arizona 55-16 on Aug. 24, defeated Dorsey of Los Angeles 34-8 on September 6th and defeated Oaks Christian 44-7 last Friday night. Alemany is coached by former Notre Dame and Carolina Panther quarterback Casey Clausen.

The Vikings have been led by quarterbacks Chris Hernandez and Pedro De anda. Hernandez has completed 16/32 pass attempts for 162 yards and one touchdown. De anda has completed 43/73 pass attempts for 649 yards and six touchdowns.

The Downey rushing attack has been led by Mateo Rico’s 24 carries for 120 yards, Jaden Allen’s 21 carries for 120 yards and one touchdown and Antonio Ruiz’s 14 carries for 140 yards and three touchdowns. The Viking receiving corps have been led by Xander Orozco’s nine catches for 138 yards and one touchdown, JoJo Robinson’s eight catches for 133 yards and one touchdown, Kevin Caldwell’s eight catches for 107 yards and one touchdown and Issiah Apodaca’s eight carries for 82 yards.

The Viking defense has been led by Andrew Garcia’s 13 solo and 11 assisted tackles, Aiden Chapman’s ten solo and eight assisted tackles, Daniel Mena’s five solo and 11 assisted tackles and Justin Sanchez’s seven solo and six assisted tackles. Coach Williams, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of San Gabriel League play.

DCC Football: The Downey Calvary Chapel football team is currently 2-1 after suffering their first loss of the season last Saturday afternoon. The Grizzlies defeated Dymally at Downey 68-12 on Aug. 31, defeated Lighthouse Christian of Santa Monica at Downey 62-21 on Sept. 7 and were narrowly defeated by Faith Baptist of Canoga Park at Faith Baptist 42-40 last Saturday morning/afternoon at 11 a.m.

DCC will host Sage Oak of Hesperia later today at Downey and will host St. Michael’s Prep of Silverado next Friday. The Grizzlies have been led on offense by senior quarterback Emanuel Gammage. The DCC rushing attack has been led by senior Aaron Alvarez, sophomore Eliab Carrera and Emanuel Gammage. The receiving corps have been led by sophomore Edgar Sactic.

The defense has been led by several players. Edgar Sactic, sophomore Nathan Cerebe, junior Adam Westfield and junior Zach Rodriguez have all contributed with solid defensive play. Head coach Mike Nuno, his staff and players are all looking forward to this season and competing for a C.I.F. postseason playoff spot. DCC is currently competing in the Express League and has a nine-game season scheduled.

Downey Girls’ Volleyball: The Downey High School girls’ volleyball team currently has an overall record of 8-4 and are currently 1-1 in San Gabriel Valley League play. Downey defeated Marina at Marina 3-2 on Sept. 10, were defeated by Gahr at Gahr 3-0 in their S.G.V.L. opener on Sept. 12, defeated Walnut 2-0 in tournament play on Sept. 13 and defeated Segerstrom 2-0, also in tournament play, on Sept. 14.

Downey defeated Paramount at Downey 3-0 on Sept. 17, will travel to cross-town rival Warren on Sept. 26 and will also travel to Paramount on Oct. 3. The Lady Vikings continue to work hard and are anticipating their second-round rematch against Gahr at Downey. Coach McCarthy, his staff and players are all looking forward to league play, competing for a league championship and earning a line on a C.I.F. Division 4 postseason bracket.

Warren Girls’ Volleyball: The Warren High School girls’ volleyball team currently has an overall record of 4-4 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 1-0. The Lady Bears were defeated by Schurr of Montebello at Schurr 3-0 on Sept. 3, defeated El Rancho 3-1 at Warren on Sept. 5 and were defeated by Cerritos at Cerritos 3-0 on Sept. 10.

The Lady Bears defeated Dominguez at Warren 3-0 on Sept. 12, will host Lynwood at Warren on Sept. 17, will host Paramount at Warren on Sept. 19 and will compete in the Valley Christian Tournament on Sept. 20. Coach Lane, his staff and players are all looking forward to league play, competing for a league championship and earning a line on a C.I.F. Division 5 postseason bracket.
