Downey accepting submission ideas for time capsule

DOWNEY – After a year long celebration of Downey’s 60th anniversary and the recent grand opening of the Promenade at Downey, the city is working on a time capsule to commemorate the past year.

The time capsule will be sealed during a special dedication ceremony on Monday, October 17, at 4 pm at the Promenade and will be opened in the year 2056, on the city’s 100th anniversary.

In preparation for the time capsule, the city is asking Downey students grades K-12 to submit an essay or art piece about their life and experiences in Downey. Winners from each grade level will be selected to have their essay/art work placed in the time capsule.

The city is also hosting a photo contest. Take a picture of what Downey represents to you, or a photo of your favorite Downey place, and use the hashtag #DowneyTimeCapsule.
Winners will have their photographs placed in the time capsule.

Finally, community members are invited to suggest possible items for inclusion in the time capsule. Suggested items must be small enough to fit in a rectangular box with interior dimensions of 18”x16”x9”.

A city committee will decide on the final items to be included. Suggestions can be emailed to timecapsule@downeyca.org. Please include your name, phone number and a brief statement of the item’s significance.

Deadline for submissions is Oct. 3. For more information, email timecapsule@downeyca.org or call the City Manager’s Office at (562) 904-7284.
