Downey girls soccer heads deep into playoffs

DOWNEY - The Downey High School girls' soccer team currently has an overall record of 19-4-2 and finished league play with a perfect record of 10-0.For their success this season, Downey was awarded the number two seed in the C.I.F. Division IV playoffs. South Torrance (25-0-6) was awarded the number one seed. The Lady Vikings defeated an overmatched Valley View squad last Friday 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs. The Lady Vikings led 1-0 at halftime and scored three goals in the second half to seal the win. The Lady Vikings then defeated Culver City at Downey 2-0 on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinal round. The Lady Vikings played Torrance (20-3-1) at Torrance yesterday (score unavailable at press time) for an opportunity to advance to the semifinal round next Tuesday. Torrance defeated Lancaster 1-0 on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinal round matchup against Downey. On the other side of the bracket, South Torrance hosted Artesia and Serrano hosted Quartz Hill yesterday (scores unavailable at press time). South Torrance defeated Chino 4-0 on February 14th and then defeated Warren 2-1 on Tuesday to earn a spot in the quarterfinal round. With a win over Artesia yesterday, South Torrance would play the winner of the Serrano-Quartz Hill game in one semifinal next Tuesday. On the Downey side of the bracket, Riverside Poly hosted La Mirada in one quarterfinal game and as previously mentioned, Torrance hosted Downey in the other. With a win against Torrance yesterday, Downey would face the Riverside Poly-La Mirada winner next Tuesday in the other semifinal. The C.I.F. Division IV title game will be played on Saturday, March 2nd, at a site yet to be determined. Downey lost a 2-0 decision to South Torrance on December 29th. It would certainly be nice to see the Lady Vikings play top seeded South Torrance again in the title game.
