Downey High sets sights on title

DOWNEY â?? The Downey High School girlsâ?? soccer team will be playing in the C.I.F. Division IV championship game tomorrow against the Quartz Hill Lady Rebels. The Lady Vikings will play Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Warren High School.The Lady Vikings are the reigning C.I.F. Division V champions after defeating La Serna 2-1 in overtime last year and are looking forward to winning another title. Coach Godfrey and her team are certainly excited for a repeat opportunity and a chance to earn another ring. The Lady Vikings currently have an overall record of 21-4-2 and finished their league season a perfect 10-0. The Lady Vikings defeated Valley View at Downey 4-0 in the first round of the C.I.F. playoffs and followed that up with a 2-0 win against Culver City at Downey in the second round. The Lady Vikings then traveled to Torrance and defeated the Lady Tartars 3-1 in the quarterfinals. The Lady Vikings advanced to the championship game with a 3-0 win at Downey against the La Mirada Lady Matadores Tuesday. Tara Kazimi led the Lady Vikings with two of the three Lady Viking second half goals. The Quartz Hill Lady Rebels are the team that knocked off top seeded South Torrance. Before the loss to Quartz Hill on Tuesday, South Torrance was undefeated with a record of 26-0-6 and a number seven ranking in the state. Unfortunately for the Lady Spartans, their only loss of the season knocked them out of the Division IV playoffs.
