Downey High sophomore wins congressional art competition

Grace Barrios and Rep. Robert Garcia

DOWNEY – Downey High School sophomore Grace Barrios was named the winner of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition for California’s 42nd Congressional District.

Barrios was recognized by Rep. Robert Garcia at a reception last week and will also be honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. in June.

Southwest Airlines is providing Barrios and one parent or guardian with roundtrip tickets to attend the reception.

Barrios’ artwork, titled “Overloaded,” will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for 11 months, along with artwork from other participating districts from around the country.

More than 100 students participated in this year’s local competition. The top 18 pieces were displayed at a reception at the Long Beach Museum of Art.

“Through art, students can learn to communicate their thoughts and emotions in powerful and meaningful ways, fostering empathy and understanding for themselves and others,” said Garcia. “Our community has so many incredible students, and I was so impressed by the amazing artistic talent on display from all across our district. I can’t wait to showcase a talented young local artist in the halls of Congress.”
