DOWNEY — Representing Downey as one of only two teams from the entire United States, Downey High School’s EPIC Jazz Choir has made history - earning a bronze medal and finishing third in the world at the prestigious European Choir Games & Grand Prix of Nations held in Denmark this summer.
The talented group of Downey High School students performed across six European countries, including a featured performance in Romania, before arriving in Denmark to compete against some of the top choirs in the world. Their standout vocal talent, stage presence, and musical precision earned international acclaim - and a place on the global podium.
Superintendent Dr. Roger Brossmer reflected on the significance of the achievement, sharing “This is what being globally competitive looks like, Downey students stepping onto a world stage and proving they can rise to any challenge. Our EPIC Jazz Choir showed the world what Downey Unified is all about: excellence, passion, and opportunity.”
The European Choir Games & Grand Prix of Nations is one of the most respected international music competitions, drawing elite choral groups from around the world. Downey High’s EPIC Jazz Choir, under the direction of Mr. Cory Olariu, joined a team from New Jersey as one of just two teams from the entire U.S. to qualify and participate.
Board of Education President, Linda Saldaña added, “This was more than a musical performance, it was a cultural exchange, a learning experience, and a life-changing opportunity for our students. They represented Downey Unified with pride, professionalism, and passion.”
This global accomplishment highlights the strength of Downey Unified School District’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) program, and the district’s commitment to providing students with opportunities that make them globally competitive and prepare them to compete—and thrive—on any stage.
