DOWNEY — Electric vehicle owners will soon have more options when deciding where to charge their cars.

The city council on Tuesday is expected to award a $82,000 contract for the installation of six electric vehicle charging stations at various locations throughout Downey.

The charging stations will be located at Rio Hondo Golf Club, Furman Park, Wilderness Park, Rio San Gabriel Park, Independence Park and the Columbia Memorial Space Center.

PMK Professional of Irvine is expected to gain the contract. The company’s $82,000 bid was the lowest of 11 total bidders.

The city of Downey already operates and maintains four electric vehicle charging stations.

“Three are located at the Civic Center and one at the city-owned parking structure in downtown Downey,” said Public Works Director Delfino Consunji. “Each charging station has dual ports, thus a total of eight vehicles can be charged at these stations at any one time.”

There are also privately owned charging stations around the city, including at the Promenade shopping mall, Stonewood Center, and at the Commons restaurant center at Lakewood Boulevard and Gallatin Road.
