DOWNEY – Security cameras will be installed at Furman Park this summer, the first phase in Downey’s long-term plan to install surveillance cameras at every park within city limits.

Furman Park will receive six cameras to monitor the playgrounds, walking trail, entrances to two activity rooms, the parking lot and a portion of the picnic shelters.

In a report to the city council, parks and recreation director Jason Chacon said the police department will have access to recorded footage.

“The installation of security cameras will help deter criminal activity including graffiti and serve as an additional tool for the Downey Police Department to further park safety,” Chacon wrote.

City officials said the goal is to have security cameras installed at all Downey parks by June 30, 2027.

Last week, the city council awarded a $44,651 contract to BTI Communications Group to install the six cameras at Furman Park. Installation is expected to be completed by July 1.
