DOWNEY – Downey’s sales tax rate will increase to 10% on Oct. 1, the third tax increase in Downey this year.

According to the California State Board of Equalization, Downey’s sales tax rate stood at 8.75% as recently as March 31.

It increased to 9.25% on April 1 to reflect voters’ November 2016 approval of Measure S, a half-cent sales tax to fund public safety and infrastructure improvements in Downey.

Measure M, a half-cent sales tax approved by Los Angeles County voters in November 2016, pushed Downey’s tax rate to 9.75% on July 1.

The latest tax increase occurring Oct. 1 can be attributed to Measure H, a .25 percent tax to raise money for homeless services in L.A. County.

The maximum allowable tax rate in California is 10.25%.
