Downey summer school begins June 9
DOWNEY — Beginning the week of June 9, Downey Unified launches its summer enrichment programs for students, this includes summer school at each middle and high school, Extended School Year (ESY) programs and elementary STEAMworks.
The middle school summer programs will be held from June 10 through July 11, from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. High School programs will begin June 12 through July 18, also Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Downey Unified’s elementary summer enrichment program, STEAMworks, will be located at Alameda, Gauldin, Price, Unsworth and Ward elementary schools, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This program, which runs from June 11 through July 10, will enrich approximately 2,400 students by instructing them on the basis of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math).
In observance of holidays, all summer school programs will not be in session on Thursday, June 19 and Friday, June 20, as well as Friday, July 4.
Also beginning on June 11, Downey Unified will be participating in the Seamless Summer Food Service Program, providing breakfast and lunch at no cost to ALL children ages 18 and younger during the summer school session. Unlike previous years, meals must be eaten on campus as grab-and-go and drive-thru options will not be available again this year. Meal distributions will be held Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 9:15 for breakfast and 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for lunch throughout the duration of the summer school schedule at all summer school locations; however, meals will not be distributed on the holidays noted above.

The upcoming 2025-26 school year will begin for all students on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025, and Registration for next year will open on July 1, 2025. A Registration Help Line will be available beginning at the end of June should families have any questions or need support with the Registration process.
