Downey Unified joins elite group of ‘Schools to Watch’ districts
DOWNEY – Downey Unified School District has been named a 2026 National Schools to Watch District, a prestigious distinction awarded to districts in which every middle school has been recognized for excellence.
This national honor places Downey Unified among a select group of districts across the country and reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that every student experiences high-quality, student-centered learning during the pivotal middle school years.
For Downey Unified families, this recognition represents more than an award; it affirms that every middle school across the district meets rigorous national standards for teaching, learning, and student support.
Schools recognized through the National Forum Schools to Watch program are designed to meet the unique needs of students ages 10–15, providing environments where students are academically challenged, socially and emotionally supported, and fully engaged in their learning. This consistency across all campuses means families can feel confident that no matter which middle school their child attends, they will receive a high-quality, well-rounded educational experience that prepares them for high school and beyond.
Downey Unified earned this distinction after all four of its middle schools – Doty Middle School, Griffiths Middle School, Stauffer Middle School and Sussman Middle School – were individually designated as Schools to Watch, demonstrating excellence in academic achievement, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and strong organizational systems. Together, these recognitions reflect a districtwide system of support and continuous improvement, rather than isolated success at a single campus.
“Being named a Schools to Watch District is a reflection of the dedication of our educators, staff, students, and families,” said Superintendent Dr. Roger Brossmer. “Middle school is a critical time in a child’s life, and this recognition affirms that our schools are creating environments where students are challenged, supported, and inspired to grow. We are proud to provide a consistent, high-quality experience for every student, and we remain committed to continuous improvement.”
The district will be formally recognized by the National Forum Schools to Watch alongside other distinguished schools and districts from across the country at the end of June.
