Downey Unified opens applications to fill school board vacancy

DOWNEY — The Downey Unified School District Board of Education has announced a vacancy in Trustee Area 7 following the passing of longtime Board Member Barbara (Bobbie) R. Samperi on September 5, 2025.

Bobbie Samperi served on the Board since 1993, dedicating more than three decades to the students and families of Downey Unified. Her legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to public education will continue to impact the community for years to come.

In accordance with California Education Code and Board Policy, the Board of Education will make a provisional appointment to fill this vacancy until the next regularly scheduled governing board election in November of 2026, unless a special election is otherwise required.

Applications are now open to any registered voter residing in Trustee Area 7. Applications are available at the District Office (11627 Brookshire Ave., Downey, CA 90241) and online at web.dusd.net/blog/trustee7/. The deadline to apply is October 10, 2025.

“The Downey Unified family deeply mourns the loss of Bobbie, who gave her heart to our schools and our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Roger Brossmer. “We now invite community members in Trustee Area 7 who share her passion for service to apply for this important role.”

The Board will review all applications and will conduct interviews at a public board meeting in October prior to making a provisional appointment.
