DOWNEY – Longtime Downey firefighter Bruce English has been named fire chief for the city of Vernon, effective Jan. 16.

English started with the Downey Fire Department nearly 28 years ago, and was assistant fire chief before landing the job in Vernon. He is a Downey native, growing up in the city and graduating from Warren High School.

English’s departure triggered several promotions within the fire department. Jay Ibey was elevated to assistant fire chief, while Mike Whitney was promoted to battalion chief, Josh Halbmaier to captain, and Richard Hernandez and Patrick Runyon to fire engineers.
