DUSD summer programs start Monday

DOWNEY - Beginning the week of June 13, Downey Unified launches its summer enrichment programs for students, this includes summer school at each middle and high school, Extended School Year (ESY) programs and elementary STEAMworks.

The middle school summer program and ESY will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, and will run from June 13 to July 14. The high school summer program and ESY will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and will run from June 13 to July 21.

Downey Unified’s elementary summer enrichment program, STEAMworks, will be located at Gauldin, Lewis, Rio Hondo and Unsworth elementary schools, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

This program, which runs from June 13 to July 8, will enrich approximately 2,400 students by instructing them on the basis of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

The elementary ESY program being held at Alameda will run from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday though Friday.

In observance of the July 4th holiday, all summer school programs will be on a Tuesday through Friday schedule as no school will be held Monday, July 4.

Also beginning on June 13, Downey Unified will be participating in the Seamless Summer Food Service Program, providing breakfast and lunch at no cost to all children ages 18 and younger during the summer school session.

Meal distributions will be held Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. until July 8; however, they will not be distributed on July 4 in observance of the July 4th holiday.

Meals can be picked up via walk-up at Lewis, Rio Hondo and Unsworth elementary schools.

The Downey Unified School district’s office hours will also be altered during the summer beginning on June 6, being open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The district office will be closed on Fridays beginning June 6 through July 29, 2022.

The upcoming 2022-23 school year will begin for all students on Wednesday, Aug. 17. Registration for the upcoming school year will open on July 1.
