ENDORSEMENT: Re-elect Hector Sosa
The Downey Patriot does not often endorse candidates. We believe our readers can weigh the reporting, evaluate the candidates and reach their own conclusions. But there are elections when the stakes warrant a clear recommendation.
This is one of them. We strongly endorse Hector Sosa for re-election to the Downey City Council.
During his first term representing District 2, Sosa has been a voice of reason and maturity. He approaches his responsibilities with seriousness, treats leadership as an obligation and understands that serving the public requires consistent effort.
He shows up. He attends meetings and community events. He communicates with residents. He takes an interest in the people and organizations that make Downey work.
These should be basic expectations of anyone holding public office. Yet they deserve recognition because the daily work of local government depends on elected officials who fulfill them. Residents need someone who listens, follows through and remains accessible after the campaign signs come down.
Sosa has demonstrated that commitment.
His service to Downey began long before his election in 2022. Through years of coaching and volunteering with West Downey Little League, the Downey Junior Athletic Association and Gangs Out of Downey, he developed relationships with local families and an understanding of their concerns. Those experiences matter on a council responsible for decisions affecting neighborhoods, parks, public safety and opportunities for young people.
His quiet demeanor also serves the city well. A council member does not need to dominate every discussion to contribute meaningfully. Listening carefully, exercising sound judgment and working productively with others are essential leadership skills. Sosa brings those qualities to the council.
His re-election is especially important as Downey approaches a period of transition.
Mayor Claudia M. Frometa is termed out this year, and Councilman Mario Trujillo will leave the council in 2028. Those departures will change the council’s composition and make continuity increasingly valuable.
With Councilwoman Dorothy Pemberton, Mayor Pro Tem Horacio Ortiz and Sosa, Downey has a solid nucleus of ethical leadership capable of moving the city forward. Re-electing Sosa would preserve that foundation now and give the city an experienced leader through the next four years, as new council members take their seats.
That does not mean the three must agree on every issue. A healthy council needs independent judgment, thoughtful debate and a willingness to challenge one another. But it also needs members who can disagree respectfully and keep the city’s interests at the center of their decisions.
Sosa has shown the temperament to do that.
An endorsement is not a promise that we will agree with every vote he casts. We will continue to scrutinize his decisions and hold him accountable, just as we would any elected official. Our recommendation reflects our judgment that he has earned another term through his conduct, accessibility and commitment to Downey.
District 2 voters have an opportunity to retain a council member who takes the job seriously and brings needed steadiness to City Hall.
We urge them to re-elect Hector Sosa.
