Funeral services today for Ugo Carnevale

DOWNEY - Ugo Antonio Carnevale, a longtime Downey resident, passed away June 13 from a heart attack. He had been suffering from Parkinson's disease and residing at Southland Care Facility for the past year.Carnevale was born in Los Angeles on Nov. 18, 1927. He grew up in an Italian community with five siblings and many cousins before moving to Downey in 1949. He attended Los Angeles City College where he played football and then went to work for the Department of Water and Power and later worked for the Los Angeles Department of Public Works. He started as a Construction Inspector and advanced to Chief Supervisor. In 1983 he retired from Los Angeles Public Works and went to work for the city of Long Beach for five more years. Carnevale met his wife of 52 years, Vicki, while rescuing her on Bunny Hill as a ski patrolman. They were married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Feb. 9, 1957. Carnevale was the coach and club leader for each of his three children's athletic teams and then directed his attention to his creative talents, including wood carving, bowl turning, and instrument and cabinet making. He is survived by his wife Vicki; son Michael (Mary); daughter, Gina (Tony); son, Tony (Susan); and six grandchildren, Kat, Maria, Alex, Dante, Gabe, Griffin and Ugo. Funeral services will be conducted today at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Downey at 11 a.m. Downey Zrelak Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requested contributions to the Parkinson Alliance or Diabetes Association.
