Giggy Saab announces campaign for school board

DOWNEY – Giggy Perez-Saab has officially launched her campaign for the vacant District 3 seat on the Downey Unified School District’s board of education.

The election for the open seat will be held Nov. 6. Willie Gutierrez resigned the seat last month.

“As a parent of three young children, I understand the importance and value of a good education” Perez-Saab said. “DUSD teachers and staff do an excellent job, and I want to continue this momentum to further the mission of the District which is to provide a 21st Century education to ensure all students become college and career ready.”

“I am committed to helping sustain the progress DUSD has made and to ensure that every teacher, school and student receives the necessary tools to succeed,” she added.

Perez-Saab said her top goals are to strengthen the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) curriculum and to support the arts.

Other goals include:

a) Education Excellence for all students.  She believes every student must leave high school prepared for higher education and success in the global economy.

b) Safety and Efficiency. Family’s need to be confident that their children will be safe while at school.

c) Collaboration.  She will strive to build collaborative and trusting relationships with teachers, students, parents and the community.

Perez-Saab is an active PTA Board Member and past chairman of the School Site Council at Rio San Gabriel Elementary School.  She also serves as co-chairman of the Downey YMCA Board of Directors and is a board member of the Gypsy Johnson Auxiliary of the Assistance League of Downey.

She is past president of Soroptimist International of Downey and serves on the supervisory committee for Downey Federal Credit Union.  She has assisted with Operation School Bell Service Project and Kids on the Block, a program to educate Downey kids on important issues in the community.

“I am running for the Downey Board of Education to ensure that every student has the chance to succeed, because when our children do well, our community thrives,” Perez-Saab said. “As a graduate of public schools, I am grateful for all the opportunities this education has given me.”
Perez-Saab is a recipient of the Red Triangle Award for outstanding service to the Downey

YMCA and community, the Kiwanis International Foundation George Hixon Fellowship Award, and Soroptimist Women of Distinction Award.
