Graciela Limon to speak at library

DOWNEY - Award-winning author Graciela Limon will speak and sign books at a free event sponsored by the Friends of the Downey City Library on Monday from 7-8:30 p.m.The program is part of a National Library Week celebration, April 20-26. A native of Los Angeles, Limon is the author of six books, including "Song of the Hummingbird" and "Memories of Ana Calderon." Her latest novel, "The River Flows North," was published this month by Arte Publico Press. Considered one of the key voices in contemporary Latin American fiction, Limon writes lyrical, dramatic novels about social justice, popular religion, feminism and cultural identity. "Hummingbird" tells the story of Huitzitzilin, who goes from Aztec princess to slave and concubine during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Limon is professor emeritus of U.S. Hispanic Literature at Loyola Marymount University. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish Literature from Marymount College, a Master of Arts Degree from the University of the Americas in Mexico City, and a Doctoral Degree in Latin American Literature from UCLA. Limon received a 2008 "Phenomenal Woman" award from Cal State Northridge, an honor given to "individuals who have touched the lives of men and women in Los Angeles and around the world."
