DOWNEY – Former Downey Mayor Hector Sosa announced this week that he will seek re-election to the Downey City Council, launching a campaign centered on public safety, fiscal responsibility and administrative stability.
Sosa, who represents District 2, was first elected in 2022. In announcing his candidacy, he pointed to his role during a turbulent period at City Hall marked by turnover among top administrators, including the departure of the city manager and several department heads.
“It remains the honor of my life to serve the residents of Downey — the city I have called home most of my life,” Sosa said in a statement. “When I first ran, I promised to bring stability to City Hall and maintain fiscal responsibility during unsettling times; I kept that promise.”
According to the campaign announcement, Sosa plans to continue focusing on strengthening the city’s finances, supporting public safety initiatives and promoting economic development in Downtown Downey.
Sosa, who works in financial services and holds a business administration degree from Cal State Los Angeles, previously chaired the City Council’s Budget Subcommittee.
His campaign highlighted efforts to maintain balanced budgets and preserve reserve funds while ensuring police and fire departments have the resources needed to serve the community.
The announcement also emphasized Sosa’s involvement with local organizations, including Gangs Out of Downey and the Downey Police and Fire Foundation, saying he plans to continue advocating for youth programs and fentanyl awareness education.
Among the accomplishments cited by the campaign was Sosa’s work on the Downtown Downey Subcommittee, including support for the upcoming gateway sign project at Downey Avenue and Firestone Boulevard using Arts in Public Places funding.
The campaign additionally pointed to the launch of Downey’s first Men’s Mental Health Awareness Fair, which Sosa hopes to continue as an annual event.
A graduate of Warren High School, Sosa has served with several local organizations and committees, including the Downey Los Amigos Kiwanis, the Veterans Subcommittee and the Downey Foundation for Educational Opportunities.
He and his wife, Daisy, have been married for more than 25 years and have two sons.
