Ivan Sulic crowned King of Downey Pride

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn presents Ivan Sulic with an official recognition after crowning him “King of Downey Pride” during the sixth annual Downey Pride celebration in Downtown Downey.

DOWNEY — Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn crowned longtime staff member Ivan Sulic “King of Downey Pride” during the city’s sixth annual LGBTQ+ Pride celebration Saturday in Downtown Downey.

Sulic serves as a senior deputy for Hahn in Downey and surrounding communities and also works as her homeless and housing deputy.

Downey Pride has been sponsored by Hahn’s office since its inception and is organized by the Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse in collaboration with local leaders, including Councilmember Mario Trujillo.

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of a recognition as special as this one,” Hahn said. “Ivan represents the very best of public service. He brings heart and compassion to every role he serves, lifting up others and making people feel like they belong. Those are the values Pride celebrates, and those are the values that make us stronger.”

Sulic was also recognized during the ceremony by state Sen. Bob Archuleta, Rep. Linda Sánchez and Assemblywoman Blanca Pacheco.

Sulic has worked for Hahn since 2011, when she was first elected to Congress. In his current role, he has worked on issues including LGBTQ+ resources, housing and environmental conservation.

He was also instrumental in establishing the Whittier LGBTQ+ Community Center, which provides medical care, mental health services, workforce development and other resources.

“I am deeply honored to be crowned Downey Pride King,” Sulic said. “This recognition is about so much more than me, it is a celebration of the incredible LGBTQ+ community, our allies, and everyone who has worked tirelessly to make Downey a place where all people are welcomed, valued, and celebrated.”

Sulic added that he hopes to use the recognition to “uplift others, celebrate diversity, and encourage everyone to live authentically with pride.”

Thousands attended this year’s Downey Pride celebration, which included vendor booths, food trucks and live entertainment. Performers included Banda Orgullo Sinaloense and Snow Tha Product.
