Jackie O’Dell

September 30, 1950 - June 17, 2023

Jackie Lynn O’Dell was born on September 30, 1950. She was the daughter of Jack and Ellen O’Dell. A daughter to a truck driver, she spent her childhood in the city of Downey, CA. As a young adult, she would move to West Hollywood, while working as a High School History teacher in the downtown Los Angeles area. She eventually moved back to her childhood home in Downey, upon the passing of both her parents. As an educator, she was a mentor, teacher, and mother to many students at Belmont High School, before transferring to a neighboring school (Roybal LC). She was beloved by her students. Many of her students considered her family. Many of whom she would remain in contact with, even after graduation. Her kindness and generosity was unmatched as well as her love and passion for education. There wasn’t much she wouldn’t do to uphold the well being of her students. She would eventually retire in 2016. Once retired, her dedication to the youth would not end there. She served as a volunteer tutor at the Downey Public Library. There, she would read and share stories to children in the neighborhood, along with teaching English to English Language Learners. On June 17, 2023, she would eventually pass, leaving behind a multitude of children and young adults that she would consider her family. A celebration of life is upcoming.
