Kindergarten registration underway in Downey Unified
DOWNEY – Kindergarten registration has begun for children who plan to enter a Downey Unified school for the 2019-20 school year starting in August.
Registration packets are available in all Downey elementary school offices. These packets will not be accepted for enrollment until all requirements for entry are met. These requirements are listed below.
To be eligible for kindergarten, children must be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2019. In addition, Downey Unified will be offering a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program for children who will reach age 5 between Sept. 2 – Dec. 2, 2019.
TK is the first of a two-year kindergarten program. Early TK may also be available for students who will turn five after Dec. 2. Your name can be added to a contact list at your school and you will be notified if space is available for Early TK students.
Proof of age must be presented at the time of kindergarten registration. This may be done with a birth certificate, baptismal certificate or other legal document. At the time of kindergarten registration, parents/guardians must also bring proof of residence within the Downey Unified School District.
In addition, parents/guardians must bring evidence their child has received a physical examination which must be completed after March 1, 2019. The Report of Health Examination For School Entry form, which is included in the registration packet, should be taken to your private doctor, pediatrician or usual source of medical care. The local County Health Departments also provides school entry physicals; this may be arranged by phoning the Health Department for times and locations. Please contact the school office for a list of providers if you do not have insurance or cannot afford a physical exam for your child(ren).
Lastly, parents/guardians must also bring their child’s immunization record and ensure that their child is current on their immunizations which include:
Five (5) DTaP (four doses meet requirement if at least one was given on or after the fourth birthday)
Four (4) Polio (three doses meet requirement if at least one was given on or after the fourth birthday, if not, a fourth dose is required)
Three (3) Hepatitis B
Two (2) MMR (one dose on or after first birthday, if not, a third dose is required)
Parents/guardians must also verify that the child has received the varicella immunization or a statement from a doctor stating that the child had chicken pox. TB screening will be incorporated into existing state physical examination requirement for children entering kindergarten.
During this routine health screening, the health providers will test students for TB only if a risk factor is present. A requirement by the California Department of Education is that parents/guardians must provide proof of an Oral Health Assessment, which must be completed by a licensed dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional.
Oral Health Assessments that have happened within the 12 months before your child enters school meet this requirement (examination must be completed after Sept.1, 2018).
