La Verne Monahan

Long time Downey resident La Verne Monahan 81 passed away at her home on Saturday night February 9th. She is survived by her husband of 62 years Ronald, her four children Michael, Dennis, Thomas and Patricia as well as six grandchildren Nichole, Jason, Daylee, Danielle, Tara and Tesse. Born February 27, 1931 in Hope, Arkansas to Edward and Ola Caudle she moved to Los Angeles with her parents and brother Robert at the age of eight. She attended and graduated from Washington High School in 1949. After high school she worked at her father's clothing manufacturing company, Caudle Sportswear, until her second child was born at which time she became a full time housewife. La Verne and Ronald purchased their home on Via Amorita in Downey in 1954 and have seen a great deal of changes in the city over the years. Until months before her passing she still talked about the orange groves across the street and the horses going by the house when they first moved in. For years she was an active bowler, took up golf and enjoyed that for many years until her health issues kept her off of the courses. Also active with the Downey Elks she enjoyed the socializing and different activities provided by this organization.Always smiling she was extremely proud of her husband, children and grandchildren and always enjoyed being out with friends. A fantastic wife, mother, grandmother and friend she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
