Letters to the Editor: Time to address illegal street racing

Dear Editor:

Every night, wannabe racers turn the southbound lane on Old River School Road, between Stewart and Gray and Imperial Highway, into a drag strip. It goes on all night long.

While I appreciate the difficulties of enforcing traffic laws in this matter, something needs to be done. I don’t write this expecting anything to be done about this, I just don’t want the city to be able to claim ignorance about this matter when somebody gets killed.

Dear Editor:

Can Downey Police do a crackdown on cars without front license plates? There’s a whole bunch of cars on my street (*cough* Lesterford *cough*) that are active in the illegal “street takeover” and “sideshow” scene, and they’re always tinkering with or removing their front plate in order to hide from cameras and law enforcement. They sometimes obscure or even remove their rear plate as well.

They also illegally modify their exhaust/muffler to make them obnoxiously loud and annoying.

We all know that people who obscure, hide, switch, or remove their license plates are doing so because they are attempting to hide from criminal activity. There is no excuse for vehicles to not have a front and rear, clearly visible license plate.
