Michael David Marine

Michael David Marine, 66 years old and resident of Downey, CA for 63 years, passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2016. Michael was raised in Downey, CA and attended North Jr. High (now, Griffiths Middle School) and Earl Warren Sr. High Schools, graduating with the class of 1968. Mike or “Iron Mike” as he was known in High School, made the Baseball Team’s, All CIF Roster. In 1969, he was drafted as a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Triple A team. Mike returned to Downey, CA after suffering an injury to his pitching arm.


Mike was an outgoing person and loved to be around friends and family; he was active with the Church of Christ, in Downey, CA. He shared his love of baseball with his daughter, Melinda who played softball at Downey High School. He also volunteered as a pitching coach for his son Derek, helping his team to win the Northwest Downey Little League and District 29 Championship(s) in 1993. Mike was known for his sense of humor and he enjoyed telling stories about his life and making people laugh; he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.


Mike was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Marine (Woodland, CA), sister Lorraine Marine (Oakland, CA), mother Alfey Harriet (Rasmussen) of Downey, CA. Mike leaves behind, two children, Melinda Marine and Derek Marine, daughter-in-law, Shannon (Tanaka) Marine and five grandchildren, Alexis, Kyle, Trevor, and Nicholas Marine and Kaylee Flores.


A viewing will be held on Friday, June 24, 2016, at the Miller Mies Mortuary, 10229 Paramount Blvd, Downey, CA, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at the Miller Mies Mortuary Chapel on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 12:00 p.m., with graveside services at Rose Hills at 2:30 p.m. All who knew Mike, are welcome to attend.
