DOWNEY — A group of residents gathered Saturday, July 19, at Temple Park to celebrate the unveiling of new signage designating the Rolling Greens Estates neighborhood in south Downey.

More than a dozen neighbors attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, where Downey Mayor Hector Sosa delivered remarks and helped unveil the newly installed signage, which now stands at Pernell Avenue and inside Temple Park.

The signage marks a significant milestone for the residential area nestled between Los Amigos Golf Course and Stewart and Gray Road. The effort to revive the neighborhood’s historical identity began when a local resident discovered original development plans from a previous homeowner. She shared the materials with local resident Jason Barquero, who initiated conversations with the Downey City Council.

“After doing some research, and surveying residents, we found that there used to be a sign here that read Rolling Greens Estates,” said Sosa at Saturday’s ceremony. “It was initially installed in the 1960s. The city located a tract map from 1967 stating that the company that developed the area was called Rolling Greens, hence why it’s called Rolling Greens Estates.”

According to Sosa, the original signage was placed in a planter at the southwest corner of Pernell Avenue and Stewart and Gray Road. It’s unclear when the sign was removed.

“With the support of my fellow council members, the city approved the new signage and this is the reason we’re here today, to unveil it,” said the mayor. “From now on when you enter your beautiful neighborhood, and when I walk through here, we’ll get to see the signage that reads Rolling Greens Estates. And that’s a cool thing. We take a lot of pride in our neighborhoods.”
