Northgate opens new Lynwood store after years of planning
LYNWOOD – Northgate González Market opened its long-awaited Lynwood store on Wednesday, marking the end of a years-long effort that included environmental cleanup, planning, and strong community anticipation.
The 36,974-square-foot supermarket welcomed customers with mariachi music and a morning program featuring local and state dignitaries. Speakers highlighted the transformation of the former gas station property into a full-service grocery store offering fresh produce, prepared foods, and authentic Mexican flavors.
“We are thrilled to finally open our doors to the Lynwood community,” said Oscar González, co-president of Northgate González Market. “This store is a reflection of our commitment to innovation, quality, and community.”
The site underwent significant environmental remediation before construction. The Department of Toxic Substances Control allocated nearly $5 million through an Equitable Community Revitalization Grant to clean up the long-vacant property.
“Environmental cleanup lays the foundation for projects like this one,” said DTSC Director Katherine Butler. “Turning properties that once posed risks into safe, useful spaces that serve the community.”
Assemblymember José Luis Solache, Jr., a lifelong Lynwood resident and former mayor, called the opening a major moment for the city.
“This store represents more than just access to fresh food. It’s a symbol of investment, resilience, and community pride,” Solache said.
Northgate hired about 250 employees for the new store, most of them Lynwood residents.
The supermarket features murals by local artist Levi Ponce and an expanded lineup of Northgate’s signature departments, including its tamalería, tortillería, pastelería, carnicería, and Carnitas Don Miguel. Customers will also find one of the region’s largest selections of fresh and dried chiles and spices.
In celebration of the opening, Northgate donated $5,000 worth of children’s books by author Patty Rodriguez to local schools and pledged $50,000 to the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation to fund scholarships and educator grants.
Northgate leaders also announced plans to open new stores in Stanton and La Mirada in 2026.
Founded in 1980, Northgate González Market operates 44 stores across Southern California, specializing in Mexican groceries, fresh prepared foods, and community outreach.
