PIH Health has successfully performed its first surgical procedure using the da Vinci 5, the latest advancement in robotic-assisted surgical technology, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s ongoing commitment to innovation and patient care.
The procedure, a hysterectomy performed on April 18 at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, showcased the robot's enhanced capabilities, including improved 3D ultra-high-definition visualization, greater precision, and next-generation haptic feedback that allows surgeons to better sense tissue resistance in real time.
“This investment in the da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system underscores PIH Health’s dedication to innovation and excellence in patient care,” said Jim West, president and CEO of PIH Health. “We are proud to offer our patients access to the most advanced surgical technology available today.”
Dr. Samuel Im, a gynecologic oncologist who led the procedure, praised the da Vinci 5 for its refined ergonomics and superior control. “Its enhanced precision and visualization allow us to perform complex procedures with even greater accuracy and efficiency,” Dr. Im said. “This translates to better outcomes and a smoother recovery for our patients.”
The da Vinci 5 system represents the next evolution in minimally invasive surgery and can be used across a range of specialties, including urology, thoracic, colorectal, general, and gynecologic surgeries. Its new features, such as advanced data integration and real-time analytics, help support clinical decision-making and surgical outcomes.
