DOWNEY – More than 200 model rockets will launch skyward next month as Rocket Fever — Los Angeles’ only urban rocket festival — returns to the Columbia Memorial Space Center on Saturday, August 16.

The free, family-friendly event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers a full day of STEM activities, live rocket launches, hands-on exhibits, and free admission to the Space Center. Now in its second decade, Rocket Fever has become one of the city’s most anticipated summer events, drawing families, educators, and science enthusiasts from across the region.

Children attending the event will receive a free model rocket (while supplies last) and can register to build and launch their rocket on site. Pre-registration is required to guarantee a launch spot and opens Monday, August 4, at 8:30 a.m. at www.columbiaspacescience.org. The registration fee is $5. Launches are scheduled for 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m.

“For over a decade, Rocket Fever has brought families together and encouraged curiosity and creative imagination,” said Nader Moghaddam, Chairman of the Columbia Memorial Space Center Foundation and President/CEO of Financial Partners Credit Union. “Financial Partners is proud to have sponsored this valuable Southern California tradition since it began as a nod to our pioneering aerospace roots and dedication to STEM learning as a way of creating stronger communities. I’m excited to see the kids at the Space Center launching rockets and their wonderful ambitions again this year!”

In addition to the rocket launches, Rocket Fever will feature a variety of engaging activities including water rockets, air-powered rockets, straw rockets, and opportunities to interact with real rocket scientists.

"I'm thrilled about Rocket Fever, especially at a time when there’s so much buzz about space travel and exploration,” said Benjamin Dickow, President and Executive Director of the Columbia Memorial Space Center. “The day should be both fun and educational for all.”

Rocket Fever will take place at the Columbia Memorial Space Center, located at 12400 Columbia Way in Downey. For more information, visit www.columbiaspacescience.org.
