Shake Shack brings its burgers and shakes to Downtown Downey
DOWNEY — Downtown Downey has a new place to gather, grab a burger and enjoy a little more of the momentum that has been building in the city’s historic core.
Shake Shack has officially opened at the corner of Downey Avenue and Firestone Boulevard, across from Porto’s Bakery, bringing one of the country’s most recognizable burger brands to one of Downey’s busiest and most visible intersections.
The opening was celebrated with a ribbon cutting attended by several prominent city officials, including Mayor Hector Sosa, Assemblywoman Blanca Pacheco, and representatives for state Sen. Bob Archuleta and Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn.
For Downtown Downey, the arrival of Shake Shack is more than just another restaurant opening. It is another sign of how much the area has changed in recent years.
A decade ago, Downey was not widely known for its dining scene. Residents had local favorites, of course, but the city lacked the variety and quality restaurants that often help define a downtown district. That has steadily changed, with more restaurants, cafes and gathering spots helping give Downtown Downey a stronger identity of its own.
Shake Shack now adds to that developing mix.
The restaurant’s location puts it in the center of downtown activity, close to shops, restaurants, the Downey Theatre, Porto’s and the surrounding neighborhoods. It also has the potential to become a popular gathering place for local high school students, families and anyone looking for a casual meal in the heart of the city.
The menu features Shake Shack’s familiar burgers, crinkle-cut fries, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, frozen custard and shakes.
We tried the classic quarter-pound ShackBurger and found it lived up to the hype. The bread was buttery, the beef was juicy, and the burger delivered the kind of simple, satisfying flavor that has made Shake Shack a national name.
We also tried a vanilla shake, which was smooth, creamy and just sweet enough.
For longtime Downey residents, the opening is another reminder that the city’s dining landscape is continuing to evolve. Downtown Downey has become a place where national names, independent restaurants and local institutions can sit side by side, each adding something different to the neighborhood.
Shake Shack’s arrival does not replace the local character of Downtown Downey. It adds to it.
And judging by the excitement surrounding its opening, Downey appears ready to welcome it.
