DOWNEY — Fifty students from across Los Angeles gathered in Downey on Wednesday for a day of hands-on science and career exploration, thanks to a STEM event hosted by Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF).
Held at SoCalGas’ Energy Resource Center, the event brought together youth from the Brotherhood Crusade, Kollab Youth Workforce Development Program, and Dodgers Dreamteam to learn about the possibilities within science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
Students participated in interactive breakout sessions on sustainability, the life of an engineer, and how STEM applies to sports, while also touring SoCalGas' cutting-edge hydrogen microgrid — the first of its kind in North America.
“This STEM event is a testament to our unwavering dedication to nurturing the next generation of innovators and leaders,” said Andy Carrasco, vice president of communications, local government and community affairs at SoCalGas. “By equipping these young minds with tools and inspiration to pursue STEM careers, we are investing in a brighter, more innovative world for all.”
Speakers from both SoCalGas and LADF shared personal stories emphasizing the importance of education and mentorship. Students also had the opportunity to network with SoCalGas employees and other professionals during a lunch and speed networking session.
“This event is a fantastic opportunity for our youth to explore the possibilities within STEM fields,” said Charisse Bremond-Weaver, president and CEO of the Brotherhood Crusade.
Over the past five years, SoCalGas has supported more than 100 STEM-focused events and donated more than $2.5 million to workforce development efforts across the region. Wednesday’s event continued that mission — empowering local youth and strengthening the future of the STEM industry.
