Space Center tickets to be available Monday

DOWNEY - Tickets will be available starting Monday for the grand opening celebration of the new Columbia Memorial Space Center scheduled for Oct. 24-25.The public is invited to the weekend celebration, which will be open from noon to 6 p.m. both days. Tickets are free and will be available at the City Manager's Office located on the third floor of City Hall. Each ticket will be valid for a one-hour time slot either Saturday or Sunday. Tickets are limited to four per person; people can pick whatever time slot they choose. During the one hour, the public can tour the Space Center and experience many of the exhibits, labs and programs. The center features an advanced Challenger Learning Center for simulated journeys to the Moon, Mars, a comet, and even Earth. A wide-range of interactive exhibits will provide insight into space shuttle operations, living and working on the International Space Station, exploration of our solar system, aerospace engineering and the range of study and jobs related to human and robotic space exploration. The Space Center will also offer programs and instruction in technology, science and engineering, while acknowledging some of the most important aerospace achievements of the 20th Century. The center will stand as a monument to the seven-member crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia, who perished as the shuttle reentered the Earth's atmosphere on Feb. 1, 2003.
