Space Center to host annual Apollo capsule lighting
DOWNEY — The Columbia Memorial Space Center will usher in the holiday season this weekend with its annual Apollo Capsule Lighting, a uniquely Downey tradition that blends the city’s aerospace history with festive community celebration. The free event takes place Saturday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m.
This year’s program once again features TubaChristmas, the long-running holiday music event performed worldwide. Dozens of tuba and euphonium players will present classic Christmas songs under the direction of Doug Nordquist and John Van Houten, both of whom are noted for their work on major film soundtracks.
The CSUF Tuba & Euphonium Ensemble is also scheduled to perform. The concert runs from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., followed by the lighting of the Apollo capsule.
Organizers say the lighting ceremony pays homage to Downey’s deep ties to Apollo-era spacecraft development, serving as a distinctive twist on a traditional community tree lighting.
Hands-on activities will be offered throughout the evening, including a gumdrop tower build, “make your own snow” demonstrations, and ornament decorating. Guests are invited to bring an ornament from home to hang on the community tree or create one on site.
Now in its 52nd year, TubaChristmas performances are held across the globe during the holiday season. Musicians interested in participating in the Downey performance can contact organizer Laura Brim at TubaChristmasDowney@gmail.com
