Sports briefs: practice for fall sports underway

DOWNEY – The Warren High School girls’ volleyball program will be conducting two camps this summer. 

Summer camp one will be position and skills training. This camp is for boys and girls in grades 6-12. The date of the camp will be July 14, 16 and 17 from 6-9 p.m. in the Warren High School Gym. 

Summer camp two will be team training concepts. This camp is for incoming freshmen through 12th grade and is for boys and girls. The date of this camp will be July 21, 23 and 24 from 6-9 p.m. in the Warren High gym.

Tryouts for Warren High School Frosh, JV and Varsity girls volleyball teams will be July 28. Coach Lane and his staff hope to see you on the volleyball court this summer.

The Warren High School girls’ cross country camp will run Monday-Friday from June 29-July 10. The ages for those interested is 12-18. Camp will be from 7-11 a.m. 

The cost of the camp is $175 and will take place at Justice Stadium, on the campus of Warren High School, and at Apollo Park. Runners should bring workout attire and athletic shoes.  

Coach Waldron says that W.O.N. is a unique fitness camp that hosts a variety of activities including endurance and strength training, diet, nutrition, former Olympic guest speakers, and much more. W.O.N. fitness camp is a great way to get into shape, have fun, make new friends, and possibly join the cross country and/or track teams or any other sport at Warren High School.

The Warren High School boys’ soccer program is having their summer camp in late June and July. 

The camp will be held daily from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The cost of the camp is $150.

Summer League soccer games will be held at Bellflower High School. Games will be played Monday-Thursday at 3 p.m. or later.

The Warren High School boys’ cross country team will begin their training in July and will run through the start of the academic school year in late August. The cost of the camp is $90.

In August, the Lake Tahoe Training Camp will feature Warren’s top 15 runners. In late August, the Desert Camp Training will feature no more than 30 runners. The goal of Warren’s cross country program is “to bring out the best in every student-athlete, by leading thru discipline, respect, and overall body awareness.” 

The Bears have qualified for the state championships in 2013 and 2014 and fully expect to qualify again in 2015. Coach Miranda and his staff hope to see you running this summer.

The Downey High School Cheer and Dance teams will be busy this summer preparing to perform at this year’s fall sporting events. 

Cheer started their practices the week of June 23 and will continue throughout the summer. 
The cheer squad had practices June 23-25 from 6-9 p.m. Cheer practices will continue July 7- 9 and July 14-16 from 6-9 p.m. The AMP Summer Camp will be July 18-20.

Cheer practices will resume August 4-6 from 6-9 p.m. and August 10-14 from 9 a.m. to noon. Cheer summer practices will conclude August 18-20 from 6-9 p.m. 

Classes for the fall semester begin Aug. 26 and the cheer and dance teams will certainly be performing regularly once school starts. Ashley Rauls is the Downey High School cheer advisor.

The dance team will have practices July 7-9 and July 14-16 from 9 a.m. to noon. The AMP Summer Camp for the dance team will also be July 18-20. Practices resume August 17-21 and August 24-25 from 3-6 p.m. Leslie Patterson is the Downey High School dance advisor.  

Come out to a fall sporting event at Downey High School and watch cheer and dance perform. Coach Rauls and Coach Patterson are excited for the new school year and are looking forward to making cheer and dance the best they can be.

The 2015 Ocean League All-League selections were released for both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams. 

Downey is the only team from the San Gabriel Valley League to field lacrosse teams. As a result, both teams compete in the Ocean League. The boys compete against Beverly Hills, Culver City, Santa Monica and El Segundo. The girls compete against Marlborough, Beverly Hills, Culver City and Santa Monica.

The Downey boys’ lacrosse team had one first team All-League selection and one second team All-League selection. Junior Spencer Farina was selected to the first team and senior Miguel Aceves was selected to the second team. Downey head coach Dale Schlegel is extremely proud of his two players who received All-League selection honors.

The Downey girls’ lacrosse team had four first team All-League selections and four second team All-League selections. In addition, junior Ashley Guerrero was selected MVP of the Ocean League and junior Ashlye West was selected best defensive player. Downey head coach Marvin Mires was selected Coach of the Year.

Junior Melissa Ramires, sophomore Marissa Lopes, junior Ariel Hernandez and senior Stephanie Farias were all selected to the first team of the Ocean League. Junior Jessica Galindo, junior Lesly Ochoa, sophomore Danielle Urtez and senior Bianca Vasquez were all selected to the second team of the Ocean League.

Coach Mires is extremely proud of his ten different players receiving All-League honors. Mires thinks his team next year will compete for a C.I.F. title with so many players returning. Mires further said that his players have a relentless work ethic and are determined to hoist the plaque.
