SPORTS BRIEFS: St. John Bosco opening football season at new stadium

BELLFLOWER -- The St. John Bosco football team will begin their 2018 season when they host Timpview of Provo, Utah on Friday, August 17, at the brand new Panish Family Stadium on the campus of St. John Bosco. 


The Braves will then travel to Garces Memorial Stadium in Bakersfield to play the Garces High Rams on August 24.


St. John Bosco will then host Mililani High School of Hawaii on August 31 before hosting Paramount on September 7. The Braves then travel to Chaminade of West Hills to compete in their fifth and final preseason game. 


St. John Bosco will observe their bye week at midseason, during week six, and begin their Trinity League schedule when they host JSerra Catholic on Sept. 28.


The Braves host Orange Lutheran on October 5, travel to Santa Ana on October 12 to play Mater Dei, travel to Trabuco Hills on October 19 to play Santa Margarita, and host Servite on October 26 in their final league and regular season game.


St. John Bosco finished last season with an overall record of 12-3 and were 4-1 in Trinity League play. The Braves were defeated by Trinity League and C.I.F. champion Mater Dei, 49-24, in the C.I.F. Division One championship game. 


Coach Negro, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of the 2018 football season and making another deep run in C.I.F. postseason play.


DOWNEY GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: The Downey High School girls’ volleyball program has been busy holding camps and practicing for their upcoming season. 


The Lady Vikings observed the C.I.F. mandated “dead period” right as the academic school year ended and summer school began the first week in June. 


Downey is scheduled to kick off their 2018 volleyball season on Tuesday, August 14, when they host Valley Christian at 4 p.m. The Lady Vikings start S.G.V.L. play when they travel to Paramount to play the Lady Pirates on September 6. 


Downey hosts cross-town rival Warren on September 18 in the first of their two scheduled matches.


In other preseason action, Downey is scheduled to play Esperanza at Esperanza on August 24, host Schurr on August 30 and travel to Mayfair to play the Lady Monsoons on September 4. 


The Lady Vikings finished last season with an overall record of 18-10 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 10-0. Downey is the reigning 2017 S.G.V.L. champion. The Lady Vikings were eliminated by El Segundo at Downey in four sets (25-12, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-19) in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs.


Coach McCarthy, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of the 2018 volleyball season and making a deeper run in C.I.F. postseason play. 


WARREN GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: The Warren High School girls’ volleyball program has been busy practicing this summer and will be hosting a two-day summer camp inside the Warren High School gym on Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, in preparation for the start of their 2018 season. 


Registration for this camp will take place at the door and any questions can be directed to Warren head volleyball coach Scotty Lane at scottylane@yahoo.com. The camp will be held from 6-9 p.m. on both days and the cost of the camp is $110. 


Warren will begin their 2018 season when they host the Santa Fe Lady Chiefs at Warren on Thursday, August 16. The Lady Bears will begin S.G.V.L. play when they travel to Lynwood on September 6 and will travel to cross-town rival Downey on September 18 for the first of their two scheduled and highly anticipated league matches.


In other preseason games, Warren will travel to Bellflower to play the Lady Bucs on August 21, host the Norwalk Lady Lancers on August 23, host the Valley Christian Lady Crusaders on August 28 and host the El Rancho Lady Dons on August 30.


Warren finished last season with an overall record of 9-7 and were 6-4 in S.G.V.L. play. The Lady Bears were eliminated by Mayfair at Mayfair in three games (25-16, 25-13 and 25-16) in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs.

PIUS-MATTHIAS GIRLS VOLLEYBALL:The St. Piux X – St. Matthias Academy girls’ volleyball team has been busy preparing for the start of their 2018 volleyball season. 


The Lady Warriors will begin their season when they host St. Paul at SPX-SMA on August 16. The Lady Warriors will continue their preseason schedule when they travel to St. Anthony’s of Long Beach to face the Lady Saints on August 23 and when they host Sacred Heart of Jesus of Los Angeles at SPX-SMA on August 28.


SPX-SMA begin league play when they host St. Genevieve of Panorama City at SPX-SMA on September 11. The Lady Warriors finished last season with an overall record of 7-17-1 and were 5-5 in Santa Fe League play. 


Coach Dube, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of the 2018 volleyball season and competing for a C.I.F. Division Nine postseason playoff spot. 


CALVARY CHAPEL GIRLS BASKETBALL:The Downey Calvary Chapel girls’ volleyball team is getting ready for the start of their 2018 volleyball season. 


The Lady Grizzlies will begin their season when they host Tarbut V’ Torah of Irvine on August 23 and will begin their league season when they travel to Oxford Academy of Cypress on September 4.


DCC finished last season with an overall record of 0-18 and were 0-11 in Academy League play. 
Coach Deatrick, her staff and players are all looking forward to the start of the 2018 volleyball season and competing for a C.I.F. Division Seven postseason playoff spot.
