SPORTS BRIEFS: Summer soccer camp now taking registration

DOWNEY – The Warren High School girls’ soccer program will be hosting a girls’ soccer camp from Monday, June 29 thru Friday, July 3 at Warren High School. Camp for ages 6-11 will be held from 8-10 a.m. and ages 12-18 will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Head coach Lily Dussan encourages young ladies to get an early start on their soccer careers at Warren High School. The Warren girls’ soccer program’s mission is to provide athletes with the tools to improve and to enjoy soccer for life.

The WHS summer soccer camp will offer all girls a fantastic soccer venue with a safe, healthy and fun learning environment for all skill levels. Athletes will improve their skills and fitness for the upcoming season and make new friends. Basic skills such as ball control, passing and shooting will be enhanced, while fundamental tactics of the game are learned. All participants will have the opportunity to work with established varsity level players and the coaching staff from WHS.

Those interested in bringing your daughters, nieces, granddaughters or have students interested in coming out to the 2015 Girls Soccer Camp this summer need to see the attached flyer. Camp is open for all girls 6 and up. The cost will be $100.00 cash or check payable to Warren High School. Registration for the camp will be May 21st from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Warren High School near room P6.

Warren finished this season with an overall record 18-4-3 and 8-1-1 in league play. The Lady Bears are the 2015 San Gabriel Valley League champions. The Lady Bears lost in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs to Torrance at Torrance 2-0.

The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 17-8 and are 3-2 in S.G.V.L. play.

The Bears split their away and home series with cross-town rival Downey last week by defeating the Vikings 4-0 in their first game on Tuesday at Downey before being defeated by the Vikings last Friday 2-0 at Warren.

Warren defeated Dominguez at Warren 13-1 on Tuesday and will host the Dons later today to complete their away and home series. Warren will play Lynwood twice next week and will conclude their regular season the following week with two games against the current first place team in league play, Paramount.

The San Gabriel Valley League standings are tight through the first five games. Paramount is currently in first place at 4-1 while Warren, Downey and Gahr are all 3-2. Lynwood is 2-3 and Dominguez is 0-5.

On Tuesday, Paramount defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 7-6, Gahr defeated Downey at Downey 6-1 and Warren defeated Dominguez at Warren 13-1. Later today, Lynwood will travel to Paramount, Downey will travel to Gahr and Warren will travel to Dominguez.

The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of 17-3 and are 5-0 in S.G.V.L. play. The Bears defeated Whittier 7-0 and Atascadero 14-3 in non-league play this past weekend at the La Mirada Showtime Classic.

Warren defeated Paramount at Paramount 10-0 on Tuesday and traveled to Gahr yesterday for their much anticipated rematch (score unavailable at press time). Warren defeated Gahr 5-3 at Warren in their first game on 4/14.

The San Gabriel Valley League standings are tight through the first five games. Warren is in first place at 5-0, Gahr is in second at 4-1, Downey is in third at 3-2, Paramount is in fourth at 2-3, Lynwood is in fifth at 1-4 and Dominguez is in sixth at 0-5. Warren and Gahr were co-S.G.V.L. champions last year with matching 9-1 records.

The Downey High School boys’ volleyball team currently has an overall record of 4-14 and are 1-4 in San Gabriel Valley League play.

The Vikings were defeated by Paramount at Paramount 3-0 on 4/15, defeated Lynwood at Downey 3-0 on 4/21 and were defeated by cross-town rival Warren at Warren 3-0 last Thursday.

Warren (17-7, 5-1) and Gahr (16-7, 5-1) are currently tied for first place in league play. Paramount (13-7, 2-3) is in third place, Downey is in fourth place (4-14, 1-4) and Lynwood is in fifth place (9-7, 0-5). Dominguez does not have a boys volleyball team. Downey concluded league play and their season yesterday against Paramount at Downey (score unavailable at press time).

The Downey High School boys’ lacrosse team currently has an overall record of 2-13 and are 1-7 in South Bay League play.

The Vikings were defeated by Santa Monica at Santa Monica 9-4 on 4/20, were defeated by Culver City at Culver City 13-5 on 4/22, and were defeated by El Segundo at Downey 19-7 on 4/27.

The Vikings have been led this season by senior Gonzalo Hernandez, senior Miguel Aceves, senior Jesse Marciano, junior Spencer Farina and junior Ty Udelhofen. Downey will conclude their league and regular season schedule later today against Valencia at Valencia.

The Lady Vikings defeated Paramount at Paramount 8-1 last Thursday and defeated Dominguez at Downey 16-0 on Tuesday. Downey hosted Lynwood on Thursday (score unavailable at press time) and will travel to cross-town rival Warren next Tuesday.

Downey has completed the first round of league play and are currently in third place at 3-2. Warren is in first place (17-3, 5-0), Gahr is in second place (15-6, 4-1) and Downey is in third place (11-13, 3-2). The Lady Vikings have five games left on their league schedule and look to make a run going into the C.I.F. playoffs. Downey will travel to Gahr on 5/7, will host Paramount on 5/12 and will travel to Dominguez on 5/12 for their last league game.

The Downey High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 11-12 and are 3-1 in S.G.V.L. play. The Vikings split their cross-town rivalry home and away series with Warren last week by falling 4-0 in the first game last Tuesday at Downey and defeated the Bears 2-0 last Friday at Warren.

Downey was defeated by Gahr at Downey 6-1 on Tuesday and will play the Gladiators at Gahr later today to complete their home and away series. Downey will play Paramount twice next week on Tuesday and Friday before concluding league play against Dominguez on 5/12 and 5/14.

The Vikings will also play Flintridge Prep in a non-league game in the Edison Tournament next Wednesday.
