Still time to attend symphony gala

DOWNEY - Downey Symphony Guild's annual fundraiser gala to celebrate St. Patrick's Day is being held at the Embassy Suites in Downey on March 12 at 6 p.m.Preparations for an evening of Irish entertainment and fellowship are nearly complete. A particularly interesting and varied collection of treasures will be featured on the silent auction table, including dinners at local restaurants and goods from local merchants who have donated to the cause. A live auction will also be conducted. A dinner will be served at the gala and guests will be entertained by the infectious rhythms of the high-spirited Celtic-Americana band When Pigs Fly. Members of this popular local group will play some unusual musical and acoustic instruments. For example: the Irish frame drum, hammered dulcimers as well as guitar, mandolin and fiddle. Audience participation and interaction will be encouraged by the band. "All this preparation is to benefit our magnificent symphony orchestra and the valuable Music in the Schools program," said Katie Hare, ways and means vice president of the Guild. "This is our way of keeping this important aspect of our city alive and thriving. The community is always cordially invited to participate in this worthwhile endeavor." Reservations are still being taken for this evening of food and lively entertainment at $70 per person, a portion of which is tax deductible.
