DOWNEY - An off-duty Monterey Park Police Department officer was shot and killed in a parking lot of the Downey Landing shopping center Monday.

The shooting was reported about 3:30 p.m. outside L.A. Fitness and the victim was found unresponsive in the seat of his car, according to Downey police.

Downey Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene and performed CPR before pronouncing the man dead.

His name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin, but he was identified as a “young and new” off-duty officer with the Monterey Park Police Department.

At a news conference Monday night, police said they were investigating several leads. No suspect description was available.

"We can't release too much, we are definitely looking for a suspect right now. There might be multiple suspects," a spokesman for the Downey Police Department said.

A police procession from the Downey and Huntington Park police departments and Downey Fire Department escorted the officer to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office on Monday night.

"As time goes on we'll provide more information. Right now our main focus is that the person who did this is brought to justice," Monterey Park Chief Kelly Gordon said at a news conference.
