Thomas Paine Day

Dear Editor:"There are times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." - Thomas Paine Happy birthday, Thomas Paine! Jan. 29, 1737 - a day that all Americans should be celebrating. That is the least we Americans can do to honor the founder of our independence from monarchy. Without Paine and his most famous writings - "Common Sense" and "The Crisis" - there would have been no document - the Declaration of Independence - and no new independent country from British rule. It is with much sadness in my heart that what I write in this letter is not taught to our children in our schools…and that it is basically unknown to most Americans is a travesty of history and justice. I, for one, will be commemorating Paine today and if you would like to join me, please call (562) 869-0608. Thank you, and happy Thomas Paine Day to all. - Bernice Stumps, Downey
