Trujillo issues statement after controversial social media post
DOWNEY — Councilman Mario Trujillo issued a statement today condemning violence “regardless of who it targets” after he posted - and later deleted - a controversial social media post following the killing of Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, a conservative commentator and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot at an event at Utah Valley University.
“No one mourns the wicked,” Trujillo posted to Instagram Stories from his personal account.
The post was widely condemned. On X, Trujillo’s post was shared by the account @EndWokeness where it has been viewed more than 775,000 times as of Thursday afternoon.
“I want to be absolutely clear: I do not condone any form of violence, whether political or otherwise,” Trujillo posted in a statement Thursday from his city council account. “Free speech - a cornerstone of our democracy - should never, under any circumstances, lead to someone’s death. I stand united in condemning violence, regardless of who it targets or where it comes from.”
