Vikings enter critical portion of baseball schedule

DOWNEY – The Downey High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 12-9 and are currently 4-1 in S.G.V.L. play. 

The Vikings finished the St. Paul Tournament over Spring Break with a record of 4-0. Downey defeated Schurr on 4/15 10-7, defeated Mary Star of the Sea 7-4 on 4/17, defeated St. Francis 2-0 on 4/18 and defeated Crean Lutheran 11-0 on 4/19 to finish the tournament undefeated.

The Vikings continued league play on Tuesday and were defeated by cross-town rival Warren 4-3 in 11 innings. Downey will conclude their home and away series with the Bears later today at Warren. Downey needs to win this game if they want to challenge for the league title. Gahr, Paramount and Warren are all in the mix for lines on the C.I.F. playoff bracket. 

The Vikings will conclude their league schedule with two games against Gahr next week and two games against Paramount the following week. The difficult part of the Viking schedule is certainly in front of them.

Coach Gonzalez, his staff and players are all looking forward to finishing the second half of their league schedule on a strong note and qualifying for postseason play. Things are about to heat up in San Gabriel Valley League play.

■ The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 12-10 and are 2-3 in S.G.V.L. play. 

The Bears participated in the St. Paul Easter Tournament where they finished with a record of 1-3. Warren defeated John Glenn 4-3 on 4/15, were defeated by Long Beach Poly 8-0 on 4/17, were defeated by St. Paul 6-5 in nine innings on 4/18 and were defeated by Serra 11-3 on 4/19.
The Bears defeated cross-town rival Downey 4-3 in 11 innings on Tuesday of this week and will complete the away and home series at Warren later today. Warren will continue league play next week when they travel to Dominguez on Tuesday and Friday. 

The Bears will host a non-league double header against Hemet next weekend before they conclude their final two league games against Lynwood the following week. After the Downey game later today, Warren will have completed the most difficult part of their league schedule.
Coach Pearson, his staff and players are all looking forward to finishing out league play on a strong note and qualifying for postseason play. The game against Downey later today certainly has playoff implications. Downey, Gahr, Paramount and Warren are all in the mix. 

Things are heating up in San Gabriel Valley League play and the playoff picture is slowly starting to clear up.

■ The Downey High School softball team currently has an overall record of 12-9 and are currently 2-3 in S.G.V.L. play. 
The Lady Vikings competed in the Whittier Christian Tournament over Spring Break and

finished with a record of 4-0. Downey defeated Whittier Christian 3-1 on 4/12, defeated Royal 11-2 on 4/14 and defeated Cantwell-Sacred-Heart 2-0 and 8-0 in double header action on 4/15.
The Lady Vikings were defeated by Gahr at Downey 9-2 on 4/13 and were defeated by Paramount 1-0 on Tuesday of this week. Downey traveled to Dominguez yesterday to play the Lady Dons (score unavailable at press time). 

Downey will host Lynwood on May 2, will travel to cross-town rival Warren on May 4 for their much anticipated rematch and will travel to Gahr on May 8.

■ The Downey High School Dance Review will take place May 3-4 at the Downey Civic Theatre and will feature the Downey High School Dance Team, CTE Dance 2 & 3 and Dance Team Alumni. 

Show times are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The cost for the tickets is $7 for the early show and $12 for the later show. Tickets are available at the Downey Civic Theatre Box Office online at downeytheatre.com.

■ The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of 15-7 and are 4-1 in S.G.V.L. play. 

The Bears competed in the Diamond Bar Tournament over Spring Break and finished with a record of 2-1. Warren was defeated by San Dimas 9-0 on 4/14, defeated Diamond Bar 18-1 on 4/15 and defeated Glendora 3-1 on 4/15 as well.

Warren defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 27-0 on Tuesday and hosted Paramount yesterday (score unavailable at press time). The Bears will continue league play when they travel to Gahr next Tuesday for their much anticipated rematch and will host cross-town rival Downey in their second round game next Thursday.

■ The middle school sports program kicked off their fifth and final rotation of track and field yesterday when Stauffer and Doty traveled to Downey High and Sussman and Griffiths traveled to Warren High (results unavailable at press time). 

Dual meets will continue next Thursday, May 4, when Stauffer and Sussman travel to Downey High and Doty and Griffiths travel to Warren High. The last dual meet will take place the following Thursday, May 11, when Doty and Sussman travel to Downey High and Griffiths and Stauffer travel to Warren High.

The all-city track and field championship will take place on Friday, May 19, at Downey High School. Doty, Griffiths, Stauffer and Sussman will all be fielding 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams for both boys and girls. Six city championships will be up for grabs.
