Vikings win league opener with 47-10 romp over Gahr

DOWNEY - The Downey High School football team improved to 2-4 last Thursday night with their 47-10 win at Gahr.

The Vikings are now 1-0 in San Gabriel Valley League and will host Paramount at Downey later today. Paramount (5-1, 1-0) defeated Lynwood (2-4, 0-1) at Lynwood 68-0 last Friday night in their league opener.

In the Downey/Gahr game the Vikings jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter. The quarter ended that way with Gahr unable to score. The Vikings scored six more points and Gahr kicked a field goal in the second quarter and Downey took a 26-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Downey outscored Gahr 7-0 in the third quarter and took that 33-3 lead into the fourth quarter. Downey scored two more touchdowns and extra points in the fourth quarter as Gahr managed to score their only touchdown and extra point of the game. It was too little too late as the Vikings claimed the impressive, 47-10 win.

Viking quarterback Chris Hernandez completed 12/28 pass attempts for 202 yards and one touchdown. Pedro De anda completed 2/2 pass attempts for 33 yards. Downey quarterbacks combined to complete 14/30 pass attempts for 235 yards and one touchdown.

The Viking ground game was led by Jayden Hollis’ eight carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns, Antonio Ruiz’s nine carries for 101 yards, Lawrence Joseph’s three carries for 62 yards and two touchdowns, Jacob Skobis’ three carries for 34 yards and one touchdown, Chris Hernandez’s four carries for eight yards and one touchdown and Pedro De anda’s two carries for 31 yards.

The Viking rushing attack had 29 carries for 378 yards and six touchdowns. The Downey receiving corps were led by Xander Orozco’s two catches for 31 yards and one touchdown.

The Vikings are currently tied with Paramount and Warren at 1-0 in S.G.V.L. play. Coach Williams, his staff and players are all looking to go 2-0 tonight when they host Paramount at Downey.


WARREN FOOTBALL:
The Warren High School football team improved to 4-2 on Friday night with their 19-6 win against Dominguez (3-3, 0-1) at Dominguez.

The Bears are now 1-0 in San Gabriel Valley League and will host Lynwood at Warren later today. Lynwood (2-4, 0-1) was defeated by Paramount (5-1, 0-1) at Lynwood 68-0 last Friday night in their league opener.

In the Warren/Dominguez game the Bears jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. The quarter ended that way with Dominguez unable to score. The Bears scored six more points in the second quarter and took a 19-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter and the score remained 19-0. Dominguez scored six points in the fourth quarter but it was too late as Warren came away with the 19-6 win. There were no offensive or defensive statistics available for Warren at press time.

The Bears are currently tied with Paramount and Downey at 1-0 in S.G.V.L. play. Coach Pearson, his staff and players are all looking to go 2-0 tonight when they host Lynwood at Warren.


WARREN GIRLS TENNIS
: The Warren High School girls’ tennis team currently has an overall record of 8-4 and is 5-1 in San Gabriel Valley League play. The Bears defeated Paramount at Warren 11-7 on September 24th, defeated Gahr at Gahr 12-6 on September 26th and defeated cross-town rival Downey at Warren 14-4 on September 27th.

Warren defeated Paramount at Paramount 10-8 on September 30th, defeated Lynwood at Warren 12-6 on October 3rd and was defeated by Gahr at Warren 12-6 on October 8th in their second- round match. Warren traveled to Downey for their second-round match yesterday (score unavailable at press time).

The Bears are scheduled to play at Lynwood next Tuesday and will host Paramount at Warren next Thursday. Warren will travel to Gahr for their third match against the Gladiators on October 18, will host Downey on October 22 and will host Lynwood in their league and regular season finale on October 25. The third round match against Gahr at Gahr on October 18th may very well determine the S.G.V.L. champion.

The C.I.F. postseason will start the week after brackets are released. Coach Starksen, her staff and players are all looking forward to finishing league play on a strong note, competing for a league title, qualifying for postseason play and making a deep run in the playoffs.


MIDDLE SCHOOLS:
The first rotation of the 2019-20 middle school sport’s competition is now complete and several teams claimed city-championships.

Stauffer claimed the 8th grade football city championship with a record of 5-1. Doty finished second with a record of 4-2, Griffiths finished third with a record of 3-3 and Sussman finished fourth with a record of 0-6.

Doty claimed the 7th grade football city championship with a record of 6-0. Sussman finished second with a record of 4-2, Stauffer finished third with a record of 2-4 and Griffiths finished fourth with a record of 0-6. Doty and Sussman split the 6th grade football championship with records of 5-1. Griffiths and Stauffer both finished with records of 1-5.

Doty claimed the 8th grade girl city championship with a record of 6-0. Griffiths finished second with a record of 3-3, Sussman finished third with a record of 2-4 and Stauffer finished fourth with a record of 1-5.

Stauffer claimed the 7th grade girl city championship with a record of 5-1. Griffiths finished second with a record of 4-2, Doty finished third with a record of 2-4 and Sussman finished fourth with a record of 1-5.

Griffiths claimed the 6th grade girl city championship with a record of 5-1. Doty finished second with a record of 4-2, Sussman finished third with a record of 3-3 and Stauffer finished fourth with a record of 0-6.

As it stands now, Doty has 2.5 city championships, Stauffer has 2 city championships, Griffiths has 1 city championship and Sussman has .5 city championship(s). Boys’ volleyball and girls’ soccer will be the next rotation of competition.
