Warren High, Doty Middle School administrators win top regional awards

Two Downey Unified School District administrators have been recognized as among the best in the region by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 14, which includes school districts across Los Angeles County.

Dr. Cari White, principal of Warren High School, was named Secondary Principal of the Year, and Katharine (Kathy) Nicassio, vice principal at Doty Middle School, received the Co-Administrator of the Year award. The honors were presented at ACSA Region 14’s annual Awards Dinner on May 1.

The awards highlight exceptional leadership and a commitment to student success. ACSA Region 14 serves more than 20 school and community college districts, representing diverse communities from Beverly Hills to Long Beach.

Dr. White was recognized for her role in transforming Warren High School into a hub of opportunity and academic advancement. Under her leadership, the school expanded its dual enrollment offerings from just two to 26 sections, allowing students to earn college credit while still in high school. She also introduced a block schedule to increase student access to classes and launched the “Pick Your Passion” initiative to encourage student engagement beyond the classroom.

Nicassio, a nearly 30-year veteran of the district, has been instrumental in advancing instructional practices, promoting staff development, and fostering student well-being. Her colleagues describe her as a collaborative, empathetic leader whose deep understanding of education and unwavering dedication have shaped a positive school culture at Doty Middle School and across the district.

“These recognitions are a testament to the incredible work Dr. White and Ms. Nicassio do every day to inspire, lead, and empower those around them,” said Superintendent Dr. John Garcia. “They truly represent the heart of Downey Unified - leaders who prioritize opportunity, innovation, and student achievement in everything they do.”

With this year’s recognitions, Downey Unified has now seen seven of its administrators honored by ACSA Region 14 in the past seven years.
