DOWNEY — Warren High School girls’ cross-country, girls’ track and field coach and ASB Director Jay Waldron is organizing a canned food drive competition this holiday season on behalf of the Downey City Council PTA.

So far 5,500 cans have been collected. Last year 40,000 cans were collected. This year has been a struggle due to the current COVID-19 situation and a lot of help is needed.

Warren High School stocks the H.E.L.P.S. room with enough food to feed the needy in our community through the holidays and well into spring. This year’s endeavor needs help so it has been turned into a competition!

To address this challenge, Coach Waldron and the Warren ASB have designed a competition among faculty and staff by the following teams. The first team consists of individual teachers and their classroom students. The second team consists of cafeteria staff with custodial/maintenance personnel and the third team consists of the administration building which includes administrators/counselors and support staff.

There will be drive-thru luncheons for winning teams.

First place between the three teams will include a Chick-fil-A meal which includes a sandwich, fries and drink. Second and third place finishers will receive the culinary arts food truck savory luncheon. Everyone eats!

The instructions are as follows. Canned collections will take place in the Warren High School front office Monday-Friday, Jan. 4-8, from 8am to 4pm. Cash donations will be accepted through Venmo (@whs-cfd) or in person in the front office. Cash or checks should be made payable to: Downey Council PTA HELPS.

Cash donations help because the H.E.L.P.S. Room buys specific food items and gift cards with monetary donations and this may be a preferable option for some. The Canned Food Drive (CDF) will run until Friday, January 8th.

For those wanting to compete: When making in person contributions each donor is asked to fill out a donation sheet providing on whose behalf (team/teacher/club) the contribution is being made. When making donations through Venmo, it is important that donors include their first and last name and on whose behalf (team/teacher/club) the contribution is being made. This is done in the section called “What’s this for?”

For scoring purposes one can of food equals one point and a $1 donation counts as two points. Contributions and humanity will have a huge impact on local families in need. Please share this information with students and post on social media outlet
