Warren High snaps Downey's 17-game flag football winning streak

DOWNEY — An area-best 17-game winning streak came to an end for Downey in girls flag, as the currently “hot” Warren Bears have started a modest five-game winning streak with a close, 13-6, victory in Gateway League action at Warren Wednesday evening.
With the win, Warren remains undefeated in league with a 4-0 record and nears the .500 mark overall with a 9-10 record, while Downey is 18-4 and 4-1.
The Bears are trying for their second undefeated league record in a row and are currently on a 17-game league winning streak over the three years of CIF Flag Football action, as it started in the 2023 season.
Warren started the season losing 10 out of its first 14 games. Included in the five-game winning streak the Bears have scored 47 and 45 points in the last two games. They also have two shutouts in league.
Downey, which finished second to Warren last year in league, has been on fire lately scoring 212 points in the last four games while averaging 53 points per game in that stretch.
In the game on Wednesday, both teams failed to score in the first quarter with Warren scoring a touchdown in the second quarter to take a 6-0 halftime lead.
The Bears first score came from a TD pass from senior quarterback Isabella Gonzalez (19 for 35, 166 yards, 1 Int.) to junior wide receiver Samantha Tinoco (5 catches for 42 yards).
The second touchdown came on the defensive side with a 16-yard interception return by senior linebacker Lexi Cortez in the third quarter.
The Vikings only score came in the second half of the game.
Warren sophomore wide receiver Jocelyn Escobar led the Bears with 49 yards on five receptions, while sophomore Sofia Aceves had three catches for 32 yards and senior Kassidy Panduro had four catches for 26 yards. Aceves also rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries.

Downey has three league games remaining in the regular season starting with Dominguez next Monday, while Warren has four games remaining beginning with Bellflower also on Monday.
Downey defeats Warren, 21-6 in Boys Water Polo
Over at the Downey pool earlier in the afternoon, Downey kept its dominance in the water over the Bears with a convincing, 21-6 win.
The win was the sixth in a row for the Vikings and eighth in the last nine over Warren going back a few years.
The Vikings, who improved to 11-4 overall, had balanced scoring as 12 players got into the scoring column.
They were led by senior Matthew Moran (3 assists, 2 field blocks) and Nathan Martinez (2 A) with three goals each.
Five players scored two goals each for the Vikings - Marcus Fierro, Julian Garcia, Reagan De Buhr (2 A), Emmanuel De Leon and Arsenio Tagorda.
Fierro had a game-high six assists for the Vikings.
“Marcus Fierro had a great game,” Downey coach Uriel Villa said. “He set the tone with strong defense causing several turnovers and sharing the ball enough to record six steals.”
Seven Downey players combined for seven steals in the game.
The Vikings took control in the game with a 7-1 lead after the opening period and
added two more goals in the second for the 9-2 lead at the half.
The Vikings outscored Warren 12-4 in the second half.
Downey has four games remaining in the regular season, starting with Gahr next Wednesday.
Warren (3-12) has three remaining, with its next game at home versus La Mirada also next Wednesday.
