Yard sale to benefit boy with tumor

DOWNEY - Loretta Mulholland knows the pain associated with a family member battling cancer. Two years ago, her grandson, Warren High School graduate T.J. Peacock, died after a courageous battle with brain cancer. As Peacock battled the disease, Mulholland witnessed the community offering their help and support. Now, she hopes to do the same. Mulholland will host a garage sale April 24-26, where she plans to raise money for the family of Brett Barta, a 9-year-old boy from Bellflower who has been diagnosed with a tumor in his spine. According to a MySpace posting soliciting help, Brett was admitted to Loma Linda Children's Hospital last summer after an MRI revealed the tumor. Brett underwent surgery and was progressing through physical therapy when a second MRI in December revealed that the tumor was still present. Brett does not have insurance and his parents were laid off from their jobs, the posting said. The yard sale will be held April 24-26, starting at 8 a.m. each day. Donations of clothes and furniture are also being accepted for the sale. The sale will be held at 7505 Sarabeth St., between Rives Avenue and Old River School Road.
