City hires 3 new firefighters

DOWNEY - Three new firefighters have been hired by the Downey Fire Department.Recruits Richard Hernandez, Adam Zipperian and Daniel Zandvliet began training Monday and will be assigned to an engine company after four weeks of orientation training. All three are also trained as paramedics. The fire department plans to hire an additional nine firefighters which will allow Engine 61to be placed back in service in June. Engine 61 has been deactivated for the past year due to budget cuts. A federal grant will finance the new personnel costs for a two-year period.
