Downey Calvary opens league with win

DOWNEY - The Downey Calvary Chapel softball team currently has an overall record of 13-4 and are 1-0 in league play after defeating the Paraclete Lady Spirits 4-1 in their Alpha League opener on Tuesday.The Lady Grizzlies are currently ranked eighth in the latest Long Beach Press-Telegram weekly poll. The Lady Grizzlies scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and led 1-0 after one inning of play. Neither team scored in the second inning and the score remained 1-0 Downey Calvary Chapel. DCC scored their second run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. The Lady Grizzlies led 2-0 at the end of three innings of play. Neither team scored in the fourth inning and the score remained 2-0 DCC at the end of four innings of play. Downey Calvary Chapel scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and took a 4-0 lead after five innings of play. Neither team scored in the sixth inning and DCC led 4-0 going into the seventh inning. Paraclete managed to push one run across in the top of the seventh inning but that was not enough. The Lady Grizzlies did not need their last at-bat and won their league opener 4-1. Bridget Castro (Utah) led the Lady Grizzlies with two RBI, Sydney Colenzo (Cal State Fullerton) added two doubles and scored three runs and Larissa Petakoff (Colorado State)continued her dominance by striking out seven while only allowing three hits. The DCC softball team will have a busy schedule in the next few weeks. The Lady Grizzlies will host the Marshall Lady Eagles of Pasadena on 4/16, will travel and play the Viewpoint Lady Patriots in Calabassas on 4/18 and then travel to play the Archer School for Girls Lady Panthers in Los Angeles on 4/22. Things are certainly heating up in Alpha League play.
