Downey hires consultant to relocate restaurant

DOWNEY - The City Council on Tuesday hired a consultant to help relocate a Mexican restaurant forced to move due to widening of Firestone Boulevard.Last month, council members agreed to pay $690,000 for property located at 7966 Firestone Blvd., at the intersection of Paramount Boulevard. As part of the deal, Downey agreed to pay relocation costs for La Chiva Loca restaurant, which is being forced to move because the city plans to demolish its building and add a right-turn lane eastbound on Firestone. Shober Consulting Inc. will be paid up to $12,000 to help the restaurant find a new location. "In order to ensure a seamless, expedient relocation to the extent possible, the services of a professional relocation consultant to assist with the relocation process will be necessary," assistant city manager John Oskoui wrote in a staff report. In the meantime, La Chiva Loca is expected to become the city's tenant for about three months. A lease agreement is in the process of being drawn up.
